Land speed records (the highest speed achieved by a wheeled
vehicle on land) have been broken time and time again since the first ever
record was recorded on December 18th 1898.
In 1906 Dorothy Levitt broke the women’s world speed record for the flying kilometre driving a six-cylinder Napier motorcar at a speed of 91 MPH. The record is now held by Lee Breedlove who drove her husband’s car Spirit of America Sonic 1 to a record of 305.506 MPH.
Also in 1906 the first record over 200 km/h was recorded by Fred Marriott. Powered by steam he reached 205.44 km/h that’s 127.66 mph. This remained the record for steam powered vehicles until 2009!
Throughout history milestone after milestone has been reached and then breached by daring individuals with a need for speed. In 1937 The blue bird driven by Malcolm Campbell was the first vehicle over 300mph, in 1965 Craig Breedlove was the first man to break the 500mph barrier and on September 25th 1997 The Thrust SSC 2 driven by Andy Green was the first land vehicle to go faster than the speed of sound at 763.035 mph.
Today that record faster than the speed of sound still stands! But the British Air force pilot wont rest there. Andy and his team plan to break this record with a new vehicle called the Bloodhound SSC. Predicted to reach speeds of over 1000MPH, the car and Andy are set to attempt record breaking speeds in South Africa in late 2015 across a 12 mile long perfectly flat stretch of desert. But getting up to or over 1000mph will be what some would call an impossible task. The only other man driven vehicle capable of speeds like this within earth’s atmosphere is a military fighter jet!
