Efficiency
and downsizing on the radar AUTOMOBILE GIANT Volkswagen (VW) revealed their
future drive system technologies at the 34th International Vienna Motor
Symposium, held on 25 and 26 august in the Austrian capital.
VW
are developing a 10-speed version of their home-grown dual-clutch transmission,
the DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox), with the aim of making their cars more
efficient and reducing harmful emission. However, it is not known yet when the
gearbox will be introduced in their production cars.
Along
with the new gearbox, VW head, Martin Winterkorn, also announced the
development of a new high-performance diesel engine. This engine will have a
variable valve timing mechanism, high-pressure injection and an e-booster (VW’s
electric turbocharger) and it will be able to produce 136 PS of power per
litre.
Winterkorn
also announced the plug-in hybrid versions of the Porsche Panamera and the Audi
A3 e-tron, which would go into production soon, while similar versions of the
VW Golf, Passat, Audi A6 and the Porsche Cayenne are also in queue.
He
also stressed the need to adopt the natural gas technology, especially in the
developed countries where the technology and infrastructure were already
available.
