Motorcycles
and scooters are a staple of transport in Asia, where the vast majority of
people use them as their primary way to get around. When tropical rains
hit, people pull over, put on their raincoat, lower their visors and keep
going. They slow down and if conditions are too severe, they pull off the
road and wait for things to clear up a bit before continuing their trip.
While driving in heavy rain, even at night is standard practice on the other
side of the world - and few accidents or injuries occur. Meanwhile things are
quite different in the UK. Being one in a thousand bikes on the road is a far
cry from being one bike on a road full of nothing but cars and trucks.
People
drive faster, take greater risks and a single and solitary bike is almost next
to impossible to see in heavy rain, especially at night. So, the question you
have to ask yourself is whether or not you really need to be on the road at
that particular moment, even if you are keeping yourself dry. What's the
harm in pulling over and waiting for the weather to clear up before you continue
your trip? Not only do you lose traction on a wet and slick road, but it
is also harder to notice obstacles and obstructions. It takes longer to
stop and you have the added danger of worrying about all of the traffic around
you splashing you with a continual spray of mist as well.
Visibility
can decrease to almost nothing, and trying to focus on what is in front of you
when looking through a foggy and rain soaked visor is not the best way to drive
defensively. If it is dark outside, your problems are increased
exponentially. In short, if you don't have to be on the road in the rain,
then by all means stay away until conditions improve. While there are
going to be times when you hit unexpected showers, that is still no excuse for
putting yourself and others on the road in danger. If you suddenly have
to slam on the brakes, you could very well skid out of control. If a car
suddenly slams on the brakes and you have to take evasive action, you may end
up losing control of your bike.
Most
accidents that occur with motorcycles are completely avoidable if the rider is
using common sense and driving attentively. If the weather is less than
perfect, it is important that you take an honest assessment and decide whether
or not it is wise or prudent to be on the road. Even if you have a lot of
faith and confidence in your abilities, there is a fine line between being a
good biker and a cocky or reckless idiot. If the weather turns sour, take
a moment and assess whether it is really worth it to continue on, or if it
makes more sense to wait it out.
